Pequeñas piezas/ Small pieces

Esta es la etapa en que se hace bastante trabajo pero no se ven grandes avances hasta que todas estas pequeñas piezas se juntan y comienzan a funcionar al unísono.
This is the stage where a lot of work is done but it does not show too much progress until all these little pieces are together and working in unison.

Para desminuir el roce tuve que agregar una cubierta de lata a la leva y todo queda retenido por bujes de bronce con prisioneros.
To lessen the friction I had to add a tin cover to the cam. All the pieces are retained by brass bushings with set screws.

Trabajando en el mecanismo/ Working the mechanism

Ya comencé a trabajar en el mecanismo interno del camión y la decisión fue hacer una caja de metal así no tendré que hacer un buje para cada eje.
I started to work on the internal mechanism for the truck and the decision was to make a metal box so I will not have to make a bushing for each axle.

La transmisión del movimiento al interior es a través de poleas, puse dos, una transmitirá una rotación lenta la otra más rápida. Las poleas son de madera sobre un buje de bronce.
The transmission of the movement is through pulleys, I made two, the small one will slow the rotation the other will increase it. The pulleys are made of wood on a brass bushing.

Esta polea recibe el movimiento lento y activa la leva que disparará los rayos... si... rayos.
This pulley reduces the rotation to activate the cam which it will trigger the lightnings... yes ... lightnings.

El Cazador de Tormentas sobre ruedas/ The Storm Chaser on wheels

El camión para el Cazador de Tormentas ya está montado sobre sus ruedas. Hoy terminé las masas para soldarlas a las llantas y corté los ejes.
The truck for the Storm-Chaser is mounted on wheels. Today I finished the hubs to be welded to the wheels and cut the axes.

Ahora debo comenzar a trabajar en las poleas para trasmitir el movimiento al mecanismo interior del camión.
Now I must start working on the pulleys to transmit motion to the internal mechanism of the truck.

Como siempre no pude evitar ir por el camino complicado y tornear en bronce las masas.
As always I could not avoid go the hard way and turn in brass the hubs.

Ruedas para el Cazador de Tormentas/ Storm Chaser wheels

Me tomó un tiempo pensar en como hacer las ruedas para el camión de mi autómata, al final recordé como eran las ruedas de mi juego de Mecano y reproduje la técnica repujando metal en un molde en el torno.
It took me a while thinking about how to make the wheels for my automata, finally I remembered how were the wheels of my Meccano set and I reproduced it embossing metal over a mold in the lathe.

Ocupé lata de tarros de café que hoy en día es muy delgada pero al soldar una por lado al formar la llanta le da rigidez suficiente para el uso que van a tener.
I used tin plate from coffee cans which nowadays is very thin but welding two of them to form each side of the rim gives sufficient rigidity for the use they will have.

El neumático en si es hecho con un cordón redondo de goma solida pegado con cianoacrilato.
The tire itself is made with a solid round rubber cord glued with cyanoacrylate.

El Cazador de Tormentas/ The Storm Chaser

Gracias a la inspiración del concurso de Sergio Pinese en Crankahead decidí trabajar en un nuevo autómata con las herramientas que aún tengo a mano.
Thanks to the inspiration of Sergio's Pinese contest at Crankahead I decided to work on a new automata with the tools that I still have at hand.

Se va a llamar el Cazador de Tormentas. Es un pequeño camión equipado para perseguir tornados, tendra sus propias nubes en el techo y habrá algo de acción de rayos.
It will be called the Storm Hunter. It is a small truck equipped to chase twisters, it will have his own clouds on the roof and there will be some lightning action as well.

Esto es lo que ya está construido hasta ahora y en la semana comenzaré a visualizar el mecanismo.
This is what is already built so far, during the week I will begin to work in the mechanism.

Mi primera Maquina Inútil 2/ My first Useless Machine 2

Esta máquina inútil fué construida en menos de un día, decidí construirla en último minuto para el concurso de Autómatas de Sergio Pinesse en el sitio Crankahead. No comencé antes ya que estoy mudando mi taller y todas mis herramientas están empacadas, así que usé lo que tenía a mano.
This Useless Machine was built in almost one day. I decided at the last minute to build a machine for the Crankahead contest. I didn't start earlier because I'm moving my workshop, all the machines are packed, but the new place is not ready, so I used just what I have at hand like these scrap pieces of wood.

El interruptor tiene una extensión para tener una mayor acción de palanca. Lo había comprado para esto y por suerte no estaba empacado.
The switch has an extension to get a bigger leverage action. I bought the switch for a proper useless machine and I was lucky to have it not packed.

La máquina tiene un mecanismo muy simple. Todas las partes son recicladas excepto el interruptor.
The machine is a very simple mechanism. All the pieces are recicled parts except the switch.

Estas son todas las partes movibles, un engranje de corona hace de reducción para mover el eje con hilo.
These are all the moving parts, a crown gear acts as reduction to move the threaded axle.

El motor fué reciclado de un juguete, el cable de una conección de computador, algo de soldadura de estaño, un alicate de punta y pegamento. Para terminar a tiempo tuve que olvidar toda la precisión de la ingeniería modelo.
The motor was recicled from a toy car, the cable was from a computer, some soft solder, a nose plier and some glue. I did have to forgot all I know of model engineer to finish this.

Mi primera Maquina Inútil 1/ My first Useless Machine 1

Esta es mi primera Máquina Inútil, fué construida en menos de un día ya que a última hora me decidí a participar en un concurso de autómatas organizado por Sergio Pinesse en el sitio Crankahead.
This is my first useless machine, it was built in less than a day because I decided at the last minute to participate in a automata contest organized by Sergio Pinesse from Crankahead web site.

Mi amigo Ginger/ My friend Ginger

Un buen amigo falleció ayer, nunca lo conocí en persona, no fué necesario, solo a través de correos aprendí a apreciarlo, compartimos conocimentos de ingeniería modelo, ideas y pensamientos, me mostró lugares que le gustaban, yo le mostré algunos que he visitado, me confortó ante algunas cosas que he pasado yo traté de confortarlo después y ahora el se ha ido, adios Ginger.
A good friend died yesterday, I never met him in person, it was not necessary, only by mail I learned to appreciate him, we share model engineering knowledge, ideas and thoughts, he showed me places that he liked, I showed him some that I visited, I was comforted about some things I've been through, I tried to comfort him, now he's gone, farewell Ginger.

2010/ 2011

Pero desde el interior de nuestra pequeña burbuja parece ser importante tomarse el tiempo de pensar en todo lo que ocurrió durante esta vuelta y pensar en que nos irá a deparar el próximo ciclo, en mi caso todo lo ocurrido este año queda opacado por la pérdida de mi mamá y todo lo que viene queda iluminado por iniciar un nuevo ciclo en una casa nueva, con un nuevo taller y tiempo para desarrollar múltiples proyectos. Tengo la suerte de pasar de la oscuridad a la luz. Así es entonces viajando en nuestra pequeña nave espacial no notamos el viaje ya que con nuestra vista apenas vemos más allá de el horizonte.
But from the inside of our little bubble it seems to be important to take time to think about everything that happened during this lap and to think about what will happen in the next cycle, for me everything happened this year is overshadowed by the loss of my mother and all that comes is illuminated by a new cycle in a new home, a new workshop and time to develop multiple projects. I have the luck to pass from darkness to light. So then traveling in our small spacecraft we don't notice the voyage because with our eyes we barely see beyond the horizon.

Se acaba el año/ The year is ending

Si tomamos en cuenta que la tierra está ubicada en un universo infinito, en constante expansión, que existen aproximadamente 70 sextillones de estrellas o, hablando mal y pronto, el número siete seguido de 22 ceros: 70.000.000.000.000.000.000.000, que existen cien mil millones de galaxias, que es probable que el universo sea constituido por un 98% de materia oscura, materia que no vemos, que la velocidad del sistema solar sea de 220 km/s dentro de nuestra galaxia la Vía Lactea y que se demore 250 millones de año en dar una vuelta completa, me queda la duda de si el hecho de habernos demorado 365 días, a una velocidad de 29,8 km/s en dar una vuelta completa al sol, en nuestra burbujita azul de aire, agua y roca es algo realmente digno de ser celebrado. Feliz Año Nuevo.
If you think that our planet Earth is located in an infinite universe in constant expansion, that there are approximately 70 sextillion stars or, speaking easy, the number seven followed by 22 zeros: 70,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, that there one hundred billion galaxies, it seems that the universe is composed by 98% of dark matter, that the solar system speed is 220 km / s within our Milky Way galaxy and it takes 250 million year to complete one lap, I doubt that the fact on which we need 365 days, at a speed of 29.8 km / s to do a full turn around the sun on our little blue bubble made of air, water and rock is something really worth to be celebrated. Navidad 2010/ Christmas 2010

Siempre he creído que el regalo más simbólico de navidad es un tren de juguete por eso estas fotos hoy.
I have always believed that the most symbolic gift of Christmas is a toy train that is why these photos today.

Es bastante obvio que eso ha cambiado hoy en día al igual todo lo que ocurre en torno a esta fecha. Ahora todo apunta a comprar, gastar, endeudarse, crédito, pedir y exigir. Y la mayoría de la gente cae en ese juego sin darse cuenta como son manipulados por la publicidad disfrazada de Navidad.
It is quite obvious that this has changed today as everything that happens on this date. Now everything points to buy, spend, borrow, credit, and ask for expensive things. And most people fall into that game as they are unwittingly manipulated by advertising disguised as Christmas.

Pero hoy no quiero entrar en ese tema que para alguno es bastante obvio, el que quiera seguir el juego que lo siga, no es mi problema, estoy un poco cansado.
But today I don't want to get into that issue, which for some people is quite obvious, who wants to follow that game let it follow, it is not my problem, I'm a little tired.

Hoy solo quiero pensar en mi propia Navidad y en que me gusta entregar regalos a quienes aprecio y que más aún me gusta recibir regalos y aún hoy en día lo que espero recibir siempre es un juguete.

Obviamente no hubo juguete de regalo, prácticamente no hubo regalos, ya habrá tiempo para buscar regalos, ahora es tiempo de organizar una nueva vida en un nuevo lugar. Igual cuando pueda voy a buscar algún juguete antiguo para mi colección.
Obviously there was no toy gift, virtually no gifts, there will be time to look for gifts, now is the time to organize a new life in a new place. Anyhow when can I will find some old toy for my collection.

Mañana ya es Navidad, la primera sin mi mamá por lo que será muy distinta a las anteriores. Ella quizás no esté presente físicamente pero su espíritu me acompaña, de alguna manera siento que la casa nueva es un regalo de ella, de todos sus años de trabajo, de todos sus años cuidándonos. Y por otra parte hubiera sido mi regalo para ella.
Tomorrow is Christmas, the first without my mom so it will be very different from previous ones. She may not be present physically but his spirit is with me, somehow I feel that the new house is a gift from her, from all her years of work, all this years taking care of us. On the other hand would have been my gift for her.

Temporada de mermelada/ Jam season

Ya llegó la temporada de frutas así que yo comencé la temporada de hacer mermelada.
Fruit season arrived so I started making jam season.

Este año el guindo silvestre dió mucha fruta así que había que aprovecharla. Aunque esta guinda es ácida da una excelente mermelada al contrastar con el dulzor del ázucar.
This year the wild cherry tree gave so much fruit so I had to take it. Although this is sour cherry it gives an excellent jam due the contrast with the sweetness of sugar.

Es un tanto tedioso sacar la semilla de una fruta tan pequeña pero una vez que se agarra un ritmo es fácil.
It is a bit tedious to remove the seed of a fruit so small but once you catch a rhythm it is easy.

Tomé las fotos con el lente nuevo y las lentillas de aproximación que hace tiempo no usaba.
I took the pictures with the lensbaby and the close up lens that I have not used since long time.

No es ninguna ciencia hacer mermelada, la fruta lavada y trozada se calienta en una olla hasta que hierve, luego se agrega un kilo de azucar por kilo de fruta y se mantiene hirviendo hasta que toma la consistencia deseada. Los frascos se llenan con la mermelada caliente y se aprietan bien las tapas.
There is no science to make jam, fruit washed and diced, then is heated in a pot until boiling, add one kilo of sugar per kilo of fruit and kept boiling until it takes the desired consistency. The bottles are filled with the hot jam then the caps are tighten.

I was walking when I found this awesome fence in this house.

Es la segunda casa que veo con este diseño aquí en Santiago y es una muy buena idea para mi nueva casa.
It is the second time I find this desigen here in Santiago and it is a good idea for my new house.

Está hecha en acero oxidado con una pintura desvanecida que más parece una pátina.
It is made of rusted steel, with a faded paint that looks more like a patina.

A pesar de estar hecha de acero se ve muy orgánica y natural.
Despite being made of steel is very organic and natural.
