Una nueva aventura/ A new big adventure

My last entry was rather dark, dark mood and dark photos, but these images were taked to reflect a not joyous moment and that's a big part of photography, to express a concept, to carry content beyond the mere image as itself.

Like the acrobat you can not release the trapeze unless having another one to catch on the other side and in my case this is the place where I will land. I believe that the jump between a trapeze and the other will not be very elegant or with great stunts but I must do the jump because there is no return back. And yet this is a place where I really wanted to land.

Perhaps this is a very big place but too many ideas and projects need lots of space, a pottery workshop, wood workshop, a small photo studio, photography classroom, automata exhibition of and a garden railway.

Of course I also also need some space to live with my dad, also room to rest, a place to sleep and time to dream.

Another important and needed thing: a large kitchen with room to move, to make jam in summer, canned vegetables in the fall, watch the rain while cooking bread in winter and open windows to let the air circulate in spring.

Manzanas, nueces, peras, duraznos, higos, damascos, mucho aire, mucho cielo, muchos pájaros.
Apples, nuts, pears, peaches, figs, apricots, plenty of air, a big open sky, lots of birds. This is the place my mother dreamed, the place I dreamed to bring her at and if I think it right the place I have dreamed all my life.

Almost three years have been gone since we closed our small factory and now the final hour have arrived, time to dismantle the work counters, put together all that remained, recycle everything possible and leave the empty spaces for these machines do their work. A long period closes but is necessary for a fresh start in a new place, new routines, new projects.

But like the cycles of nature we must leave the old shell, while the dried remains of this ending should be used to feed the new body, the new life, nature does not give space for waste.

Many years ago I took a long time to assemble all this, so now it worth taking the time to be disassembled, it comes down to small parts which surely will return to take another form, another body, another use.

The dust has slowly covered the floor, traces have long ago disappeared and where voices sounded there is only silence. During these three years the sun light came in through the windows and have not found anyone to illuminate and it will not find anymore.

All this was expected, what was not expected was that my mother would be not with us in this new cycle, in fact, she was part and the main cause of this new cycle. The machine she used to set the pace for the whole factory, increase the pace of the whole factory now has no owner, but all the work she did is what leads us to achieve this new birth, to get this new place, this new home.

Esperar lo inesperado 1/Expect the unexpected 1

Today I went to San Cristobal hill to walk on a new trail that no one uses and I inadvertently fell into an art event organized by the Foundation Our Children dedicated to supporting children with cancer.

Primera quema de Raku/ First Raku firing

Yesterday Thursday we conducted a first firing to test the Raku kiln that we built in our pottery workshop. Our teacher, Francisco Olivares, controlling the flow of gas.

Only two pieces were fired because the test was to determine how much time is needed to reach 1000 degrees celsius. It works with gas and it was put together by recycling insulation bricks from an old electric kiln.

In this first test it took about two hours to reach the required temperature.

This time could be reduced now that the humidity has been removed from the bricks, increasing the flow of gas and applying insulation to the lid.

The tests were placed in a container with grass which is burned to release carbon that combines with the glaze of the piece.

Those who follow my blog know that almost everything is black and white but from time to time I add touches of color.

About six years ago every time I come to this fair I visit this artisan Juan Carlos Orellana, he works copper. It is the only person who I have seen building pop-pop boats here in Chile.

Usually he makes decorative figures, pots and other utilitarian items but using his beating technique he made the boiler for a small oscillating steam engine.

This past Friday and Saturday I participated as an exhibitor at the second Chicureo Potters Meeting.

Overview of the display of our workshop. Like last year there was not a large attendance, but as a meeting between potters it served to contrast the experiences and techniques of the various workshops in the area.

The main thing about our participation as a workshop was to present the first results of glazes that we have been studying during the year, a study that sets us apart from other workshops exhibitors.

These are the pieces that I brought to the exhibition this year, it was not a lot due the glazes study, but at least people liked them and some pieces were sold.

Things have been pretty quiet here lately and that was because my Mother passed away two weeks ago. It is time to move on so here I'm posting again.

In this photo, taken in Germany, is my grandmother Johanna Langner at the right, my aunt Helga and my mother at the left who seems to be about five years old here. My grandmother died in Germany, my grandfather, aunt and mother came to Chile fleeing the war in 1939.

Here in Chile she married twice, first she had two sons, Michael and Tomas then two more Daniel and Andres.

In this photo she is already 81 years and 53 with my father Juan. She had an extremely productive life, was always restless, hard-working and creative. Finally, after years of worrying about everyone, it took time for herself and now she rests in peace.
