After a long time updating my Pottery Thursday usual section, not because I haven't did anything on Thursday, it was just in order I had not time to take photos at the workshop.

This plate is about 34 cm wide and 7 tall, it seems small but is big. Triming is ended and now it have to dry and being bisque.

This other plate is about 44 cm in diameter and about 4 cm tall. It is a fact that ceramics looks larger than its real measures.

Quema primitiva, el resultado/ Pit fire, the vases

This is are the pieces from the pit firing. As this was my first experience there was a number of things that I didn't know, such as covering the pieces with salt, vegetables or some oxides to achieve more shades. So the pieces were not well prepared, then, I did not achieve a great result.

This piece was in the pit fire, it had banana peels tied with wire. It only got light colorations.

This second piece was also burned in the pit fire, covered with reeds and some salt. The other side was more stained but too dark.

This is the worst piece, it was fired with cow dung and then covered with shredded horse manure. Should have been shiny black but did not succeed. I think it did not get to glow red and then it was not well covered so the manure burned with too much oxygen.

This piece is the most successful. It was fired in a drum with sawdust and white and gray tones were achieved. In the mouth and neck there are shimmering blacks.

Quema primitiva 1/ Pit fire 1

On Saturday I went to a pit fire organized by the magazine Esteka by the Pottery Workshop Huara Huara.

The bisque pieces and covered with vegetables, salt, wire mesh and other objects where the fire will create different shades which is the objective of this firing. The bottom of the pit is covered with sawdust then the pieces are interspersed with wood. They added salt and some oxides to achieve color effects on the pieces.

Everything is covered with a layer of thinner wood in order to keep a constant and slower fire . Finally is covered with metal roofing plates to make it even a slower combustion. In the low temperature of this kind of firing colors takes more time for laying down the in the pieces.

It never hurts a little ceremony to the four elements to make more sense of community and to wish a good burn.

The pit is headed in the direction of the wind so it sets on fire very quickly.

Finally, it burns for several hours reloading the pit with wood from time to time.

Quema primitiva 2/ Pit fire 2

The second firing was a sawdust firing and the expected effect on the pieces are mostly white and gray.
Old oil drums are loaded with layers of sawdust within pieces are deposited, the heaviest in the bottom and the lighter in the top. In this case, no oxide was added, only sawdust.

A metal grill is inserted in order to contain the pieces collapsing onto the bottom of the drums.

The final layer are pieces of wood where the fire starts, which is slowly consuming the sawdust down. It is also a slow firing.

Quema primitiva 3/ Pit fire 3

The last firing was with cow dung used as fuel.

The fire is prepared with pieces of wood to start the fire, then the cow dung where is interspersed with the pieces.

A little more wood is added to ensure that it burns even, it is necessary that the parts are fully covered.

Finally the fire is lit. In this case it is necessary to monitor this firing since pieces must be constantly covered by fire.

This type of firing is faster. The pieces are already bisque fired, what you have to achieve now is that they are glow red then remove and put in drums filled with shredded horse manure.

The idea now is to cover the pieces with the dung which will carbonize in contact to the pieces. The expected result is black pieces evenly glossy, to achieve this pieces must be cooled fully covered as they can turn white when oxidize exposed to air.

Artesania tradicional, rostros/ Traditional handcraft, faces

Like last year more I decided to shoot faces rather than the exhibition. Here are a few of them.

Artesania tradicional/ Traditional handcraft

Today I went to this handcraft exhibition prepared by the Universidad Catolica de Chile, like I have been doing every year since 1974.

Not much new things, so I have no photos of the sample, in the next entrie I will upload some pictures of faces.

Glaze learning is now going fast and we are close to make our own. Meanwhile I decided to upgrade the system and enter the test tables to my computer with pictures of the results.

I've been preparing five large pieces for the pit firing we are going to have two weeks from now.

Finally we mounted our first collective pottery exhibition of the Potters of Chicureo. These first photos are from the workshop of Francisco Olivares where I am studying.

This is the table with my work. As this was the first exhibition there was not really a big crowd but as experience it was enriching.

This is the work of Francisca Gaete and Maria Luisa Alamos, both of them already working their own glazes. The review of our workshop was very good.

These are photos of the work from the other participants workshops in the sample.

Unlike our workshop the work of the other people is more sculptural.
